Reduction of especially phosphorus load is urgently needed to improve the state of the Baltic Sea. Project PURE (Project on Urban Reduction of Eutrophication) implements one of the most cost effective and quickest ways to tackle eutrophication: it enhances phosphorus removal at selected municipal wastewater
treatment plants in the Baltic Sea region. The phosphorus removed from the wastewaters stays in the wastewater sludge and it is essential to prevent this phosphorus from leaking to
the watercourses. Thus PURE also maps, develops and shares good practices and innovative techniques to handle the wastewater sludge.
